Gertrude Hawk Chocolates 2023 Fundraiser Details

Who wants chocolate???

We are once again partnering with Gertrude Hawk Chocolates for our spring fundraiser! This has historically been our biggest fundraiser of the year. Profit on this sale is about 50% of the catalog prices, and all profits will be going directly to the individual grade level accounts so that teachers have funds available for end-of-year activities. Last year students raised over $8,000!

ALL PAPER ORDER FORMS ARE DUE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27! Getting orders submitted ON TIME will help ensure that products are delivered and distributed to students before the April break. PLEASE HELP US MEET THIS DEADLINE BY GETTING YOUR ORDER IN ON TIME! (Or early - feel free to send those forms in anytime before February 27th!) 
  • **KEEP THE PINK (BOTTOM) COPY OF THE ORDER FORM FOR YOUR RECORDS!** You'll need the copy of the order form to deliver the products to your buyers. 
  • Make sure to completely fill out the information at the top of the order form (student name, organization - HUNTINGTON, grade, and contact phone number). 
  • Checks should be made payable to Huntington School PTO. 
  • Enclose the top copies (white and yellow) of the order form and total payment in the envelope provided, seal, and return to school with your student. 

​You can also place orders online. Go to the Fundraising Parent Portal and click "Start adding a Seller" to create an account. Our organization ID is 708137 (enter this number, then select "Huntington Elementary School, Syracuse, NY"). Online orders can be shipped to school with the group order for free BUT MUST BE SUBMITTED BY FEBRUARY 27th. Online orders to be shipped directly to a home can be placed through March 26, 2023, but shipping fees will apply. Do not include web orders on the paper forms.

Delivery to school is expected during the week of March 27, so that products can be distributed to students before the April break week.

We are accepting nominations for the 2022-2023 Executive Board!

Are you interested in a position on the PTO Executive Board for next school year? We are currently accepting nominations for Secretary and Vice President. Board elections are held annually in May, and the PTO bylaws state that any member can run for the position of Secretary or Vice President. (The Treasurer and President positions must be filled by someone who has already served on the Board for at least one year prior to their nomination.)  
  • Vice President: Assists with organizing volunteers and events, or with other activities as needed. Attends PTO fundraisers and events as needed. Conducts meetings in the President’s absence.
  • Secretary: Keeps minutes of all meetings, writes letters/emails, creates flyers, and maintains a record of correspondence. Also maintains the PTO website, email account, listserve, and social media. 

To submit a nomination for the 2022-2023 Executive Board (yes, you can nominate yourself!), fill out this online form or send an email to Holly Keating, Office of Family Engagement Program Aide for Huntington, at hkeating@scsd.us no later than 3:00 p.m. on April 28. This email should include “PTO Board nomination” in the subject line, and the text of the email should indicate: your name and contact information, student’s grade level(s), and the position you are interested in (Secretary or Vice President). Voting for all Executive Board positions will take place at the May 12 PTO meeting (6:30 p.m., to be held in the Huntington library).

The Executive Board meets regularly once a month throughout the year (in addition to the general PTO meetings), or more frequently if needed. Executive Board meetings are typically held on a weekday evening, depending on the Board members’ availability.

Welcome back! 2021-2022 opening information

The 2021-2022 school year starts on Wednesday, September 8. Please review this letter from Principal Dupree for important information including health and safety guidelines and arrival/dismissal procedures. 

Some key items to note: 
  • Masks are required for all individuals throughout the school day. Students must wear a mask upon entering the school bus and the school building. 
  • Elementary hours are 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (doors open at 8:40 a.m.)
  • Middle school hours are 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:55 a.m.)
  • Arrival and dismissal procedures have been updated for this school year. Please review the details in the letter and on the map. 
  • Families will have an opportunity to tour the school building on Tuesday, September 7. There are two tour times: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. This is a time to see the newly renovated learning space. You may also drop off supplies. 
  • Families are invited to meet their students' teachers during Open House on September 23, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Huntington Panther Street Mural Project

We are very excited about a project we have planned for the intersection of Sunnycrest Road and Forest Hill Drive! This will include a panther paw street mural and some painted "bump outs" around the existing crosswalks and the existing no parking zone along the curb on Sunnycrest Road in front of the school. See the full plan here.

This will create a point of school and neighborhood pride, and enhance safety for students (and everyone!) by making the corners more visible and providing additional space between pedestrians and traffic. We received Special Projects funding from Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today (TNT) to purchase the supplies. The project was also reviewed and approved by the Syracuse Public Art Commission.  

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! We will be painting the project on Sunday, August 8 (raindate: Sunday, August 15) from about 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There are two main jobs for volunteers: (1) manning the barricades and (2) painting!

We have received a permit from the City to close Sunnycrest Road between Stafford Ave and Woodbine Ave, along with a short section of Forest Hill Drive near the school, to through traffic during the painting (see dates/times above). You can see the traffic closure area on this plan. We must have volunteers manning each of the four barricade locations at all times (to move the barricades in case emergency access is needed). 

We also need people to help paint the mural! We'll be outlining it in chalk first, and then we'll need about 6 people to help with the painting (or more people, taking turns). 


Adult volunteers only, please. We do not recommend that children participate since this involves working in the road.

Also, please plan for an alternate route around the intersection during the project installation on the morning of August 8.

2021 end of the school year information

As noted in her recent letter to families, Mrs. Harlow will be retiring from the SCSD at the end of this school year. We are so grateful for her time at Huntington, and wish her the best in retirement! Ms. Alison Dupree will be joining Huntington as our new principal. We look forward to welcoming her to the Huntington community! 

Other items to note: 
  • Summer school begins July 6. You can still register your student(s) here. 
  • The 2021-2022 school year will begin on Wednesday, September 8. We will return to a 5-day a week schedule for all students, with elementary hours 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and middle school hours 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Contact the school by July 30 if you need to change your address, contact information, or transportation needs (315-435-4565). 
  • School supply lists for 2021-2022 school year by grade level are here.

Are you interested in a position on the PTO Executive Board? We are currently accepting nominations for Secretary and Vice President. (The Treasurer and President positions must be filled by someone who has already served on the Board for at least one year prior to their nomination.) All parents and guardians of Huntington students are members of the Parent-Teacher Organization!  

To submit a nomination for the 2021-2022 Executive Board, send an email to Melissa Hidek, Office of Family Engagement Program Aide for Huntington, at mhidek@scsd.us no later than 3:00 p.m. on April 30. This email should include “PTO Board nomination” in the subject line, and the text of the email should indicate: your name and contact information, student’s grade level(s), and the position you are interested in (Secretary or Vice President). Voting for all Executive Board positions will take place at the May 13 PTO meeting (6:30 p.m. on Zoom).  

The duties of the officers are as follows:

We hope to return to many of our typical activities in the 2021-2022 school year. In past years, the PTO has organized many fun events for students and families such as family dances, semi-formal dances, and Family Bingo Night. We also run fundraisers which are used to support field trips and purchase classroom supplies. All of these activities, events, and fundraisers are run by volunteers! Please consider getting involved, either on our Board or by simply attending a meeting!
