From the Desk of Principal Harlow,
Welcome all new and returning families! It is always exciting to be preparing for a new school year, and the 2016-2017 school year promises to be chock full of exciting opportunities for our students here at Huntington.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome our new Vice Principal, Dan Evans, to Huntington. Mr. Evans replaces Mr. Ballenger, who moved over to Salem Hyde. Mr. Evans comes to us with a great deal of experience in the SCSD, having held administrative positions in many of our schools. Mr. Evans will be working primarily with our 7th and 8th grades, but he will be a huge asset to our entire Huntington school community.
We also welcome back a long time favorite at our elementary level, Mrs. DeCarlo is back! She took some time off to be with her newborn, and she returns to us as part of our third grade team, teaching ELA. We also welcome a new middle school music teacher, Elaina Renfrew, and a new middle school health teacher, Ms. Courtney Fields. We look forward to all of our new staff joining our Huntington family.
As you can see from the other side of this letter, we have several initiatives that we are planning on continuing this school year, but our main objective is to ensure that ALL students are afforded every opportunity to succeed, academically and personally. Our teachers have worked hard over the summer learning and improving, so that our students benefit from the most effective, high quality instructional practices and the best research-based strategies and resources, including the latest in technology. Also, our entire staff have been trained in social-emotional supports to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment in every classroom.
I encourage everyone to make the time to attend our monthly PTO meetings, check out their website, and make sure your e-mail address is on file so you can be sure to receive regular updates. Huntington also has a Twitter account (the links are all on the SCSD website)! Throughout the year we will be sharing our school-wide goals, student achievement data, behavior data, the Parent Involvement Plan, and more, and check your child’s backpack for info from teachers. Please also make sure your address and phone number(s) have been updated in Central Registration, especially if you have moved since last year.
School for all students begins Wednesday, September 7 th (Pre-K starts Thursday), and Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Tuesday September 6 th , at 1:00 p.m. Lastly, we look forward to seeing everyone at our 2nd Annual Back-to-School Barbecue here at the school on Thursday, September 8th, from 4:30-5:30 pm, and then our Open House from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. See everyone there!
